KELLY MCALLISTER FOR INSPIRER.NU
Kelly McAllister a young talented designer from Scotland, only 23 years old, promised to a brilliant future in the jewelry industry. Using mainly metal and feathers, her creations leads us to an edgy and timeless universe, perfect for day and night. I personally love the feather necklace who's gorgeous and probably one of the strongest piece of the collection I had the pleasure to discover.
Your favorite designers?
My favourite designer is without a doubt Alexander McQueen. Since I first became interested in fashion, he has been my love! I admire his fearlessness in creativity. I was heavily influenced by his work in my final degree show collection at university. My favourite jewellery designers are Shaun Leane, Bjorg, Fannie Schiavoni (her chainmail work is unreal) and Pamela Love whom I love for her ethnic but super contemporary jewellery. I am also a huge fan of the Victoria’s Secret designers responsible for the beautiful angel wings created each year.
Your favorite piece in your collection ?
I personally love to wear the blackened steel chainmail necklace as it is so versatile and can both dress an outfit up or down. The feathered earrings are another favourite of course, particularly the white feathers. In my latest work I have been using lots of little semi-precious crosses which I absolutely adore! A day rarely goes by where I am not wearing something featuring a little amethyst, onyx or rose quartz cross. These will definitely be some must have items from my new collection.
Your inspirations ?
I draw my inspiration from many sources: fashion, music, photography, art. I never throw any fashion magazines away so I am forever looking through them to find hidden gems forgotten about. I am also a big fan of fashion blogs – I like to see what girls my age are interested in so I can design with this in mind. It may sound a little selfish to say that my biggest inspiration is myself – I always design jewellery for me, how I would like it to look and feel and to be produced to my standard. I would never make something that I would not wear myself.
How to define your universe ?
My universe is one of little time. If I am not busy creating jewellery I am at one of my two jobs. Constantly with jewellery on my mind, I create in my head all day and come home at night to turn my ideas in to a reality.
Which materials do you use ?
I use mostly metals in my jewellery. Plated metals and stainless steel with the addition of semi-precious gemstone charms and feathers. My favourite material is stainless steel, which I use to make chainmail. I love this because it has a lovely shine to it and will not tarnish over time.
