Carrie Underwood Supports LBGT
Country music fans have had their hands full lately. This past weekend Nashville, Tennessee hosted the CMA Fest and CMA Music Awards. But now they're getting attention for an entirely different reason - Carrie Underwood has been quoted as saying that she supports gay marriage.
"As a married person myself, I don’t know what it's like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry," she told The Independent, a UK newspaper. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."
Mrs. Underwood is the first in the country music industry to announce such liberal stance on the subject, and it might do more harm than good. Many are saying that such a liberal stance on a hot topic with a primarily conservative audience may cost her fans. In fact, many fans on WSMV (out of Nashville) have posted to WSMV's facebook page that they won't be listening nor purchasing her music any longer because of her statement. However, she stated that her faith in God led her in this direction.
"Our church is gay friendly," she said. "Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."
All of her fans may not have been supportive, but many in the entertainment industry have been. Miley Cyrus tweeted she thought that Underwood should take her beliefs a step further and pose for the NOH8 Campaign, a photographic silent protest aimed at promoting marriage, gender and human equality. Chely Wright, country music's first openly gay singer, agreed.
We at Inspirer know that LBGT support is a rocky subject, but we think that Carrie is an inspirer herself for being so open about her views on such a controversial topic. What do you guys think?
